Located thousands of miles away from Telluride in the beautiful city of Honolulu, Hawaii and a mission to serve men and women in the United States Military, this new venture is as unique as the beer they brew. Recently a member of the Blues and Brews staff got to talk with Home of the Brave president and founder Glen Tomlinson about the Home of the Brave Beverage Company and their beer. This is what he found out.

In 1991 Glen Tomlinson started Home of Brave Company in conjunction with the 50 year anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The company was started to educate the military, island visitors, schools, and veterans by conducting tours and historical educational programs in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tomlinson’s family owns the Home of the Brave historical WWII museum that features one of the largest and most unique collections of WWII memorabilia in the pacific. After 20 years of working with the United States Military, Tomlinson decided to start a beer company.

Tomlinson explains “My two sons moved from the islands to Colorado to go to college. Duke went to school in Ft. Collins and Baron went to Ft. Lewis in Durango, CO. Both boys fell in love with craft beer and started home brewing with their friends. Prior to graduation, they were determined to get into the craft beer business and proposed that we create quality beverages for the U.S. Military.”

As the Home of the Brave Beverage Company was born, so was their first beer Pilot Pale Ale. Pilot Pale ale was created by O’Dell brewer Jeff Doyle and brewed in collaboration with Maui Brewing Company. Tomlinson says “We couldn’t have done it without the help of Garrett Marerro, president of Maui Brewing Co. who took us under his wing and in the true spirit of craft brewing, helped us get started”. Garrett continues to support Home of the Brave Beverage Company, brewing their draft beer at the award winning Maui Brewing Co.

Tomlinson describes Pilot Pale ale as “craft-brewed with bread like malt character so as to avoid sweetness, while still maintaining just enough body to balance out a delicate dry bitterness, fermented with an American ale yeast strain. You can taste the natural fruity esters from fermentation that harmonize with a generous aroma hop addition of spicy citrus floral American hops. It has a light crisp dry finish that leaves just a breath of bitter bouquet.”

In addition to Pilot Pale Ale, Home of the Brave, also brews Landing Zone Lager and is working on a dark lager scheduled to release in December, to commemorate the 70th year anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Home of the Brave brews are currently being served at military bases to support the troops and restaurants on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Keep an eye out for Home of the Brave brews as Sprecher’s Brewing in Wisconsin is now producing Home of the Brave bottled beer and sodas for continental US distribution. You can find our delicious handcrafted by Maui Brewing Company Brew on tap at the beautiful snack bar on the beach at the Hale Koa Hotel, the Koa Oasis. We soon will be available at other military installations on the island (Hickam, Fort Shafter and more!) and look forward to continuing our support of those in the U.S. Military through this new facet of the Home of the Brave lineage!
With the summer in full effect, we have bumped our pick-up times up by about 5 minutes at each location in order to "beat the crowd" and long lines down at the Arizona Memorial that have been forming bright and early. As many of you already know, we pride ourselves on usually being one of the first groups in line in the morning, and to increase our chances we have to wake up a little bit earlier!
Keep checking back with us as we update our progress and remember...
We will always be the land of the free, as long as we are the...HOME OF THE BRAVE!
We hope you had a wonderful fourth of July weekend and stay tuned for more updates throughout the week!
Mahalo Nui Loa & Aloha,
HOTB Tours

Latest News from HOTB & HOTBBC

Home of the Brave Tours has been very busy expanding the past few months!

As many of you have heard, Home of the Brave Tours is expanding its support of our Armed Forces into the Home of the Brave Brewing Company, a beverage company with the thought of gradually growing into our very own brewpub and/or brewing company! text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VifGzLATnRE/S6bLQX-u_JI/AAAAAAAAATA/ra6rlsP3RQU/s1600-h/Screen+shot+2010-03-08+at+7.41.22+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; George soar over Pearl Harbor and follow Japanese Zero's towards Kaena Point on the Westside of the island. They are officially credited with shooting down four enemy aircraft apiece that morning during the attack, but do you know the real number of aircraft they took down?

Ken Taylor came on our Home of the Brave Victory Tour in the early 90's and told us the truth about how many planes they shot down on December 7, 1941. To be officially credited with shooting down another aircraft you have to have visual verification of the kill. Ken & George were waging battles over the Pacific miles off the coast and many of their tallys were not counted. Ken told us how he actually shot down SIX enemy aircraft and George show down EIGHT!

HOTB update

Aloha!

The beautiful month of March is upon us and everything is going extremely well here with Home of the Brave. Paul Deprey, Superintendent of the National Park Service at Pearl Harbor introduced the moment of silence, which brought a passing through of the USS Lake Erie around Ford Island.

The Hawaii Air National Guard presented the Missing Man Flyover in spectacular fashion as well, followed by a plethora of wonderful speakers and speeches, highlighted by Allen Millett, the keynote speaker who is the director of the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans.

The tail end of the presentation brought wreath presentations by the State of Hawai'i, the United States Armed Forces, the National Park Service and many of our Pearl Harbor Survivors in attendance-A Rifle Salute, provided by seven United States Marines, ended the program with a water tribute as well fronting the USS Arizona Memorial and Ford Island.

I was fortunate to reconnect with a good friend of Home of the Brave Tours down at the ceremony that morning. Al Bodenlos and I enjoyed a lengthy conversation about his experience that morning, where he remembered "the planes were flying so low that you could see the faces of the pilots. They shot at my shuttlebus I was on by inches, with bullets whizzing all around and everyone diving for safety into a nearby ditch." His most vivid memories of that morning were the USS Arizona blowing up and the USS Oklahoma rolling over as he helplessly watched other ships sink to the harbor floor. Al has taken our Victory Tour many times in the past and we proudly had him join us a few days after the commemoration this year as well!

Home of the Brave Brewing Company

Home of the Brave Brewing Company has broken ground with their new website at www.homeofthebravebrewing.com-more information coming soon! The USS Oklahoma (BB-37) was a World War I-era battleship and the twin sister oft he USS Nevada, commisioned together in 1916. They served in World War I protecting Allied convoys on their way across the Atlantic before being "modernized" from 1927-1929 and helped rescue American citizens and refugees during the Spanish Civil War in 1936.

In World War II she was stationed at Pearl Harbor when the attack occurred on December 7th, where she lost 429 sailors when she was sunk and capsized by Japanese bombs and torpedoes within the first 12 minutes of the surprise attack. In 1943 she was uprighted, but unlike many of the other battleships salvaged from Pearl she was never repaired or returned to duty. Instead, she was stripped of guns and sold for scrap, sinking while under tow to the mainland in 1947.

One of the little known amazing feats of the aftermath of salvaging the attack on Pearl Harbor is that sailors were pulled from the USS Oklahoma more than two days after the initial attack-many of the men on board were trapped inside and rescuers worked tirelessly around the clock to save those who were trapped inside her capsized hull. A wonderful memorial dedicated to all those who lost their lives on board the USS Oklahoma can be found on Ford Island, detailing the ship and listing all the names of the innocent men who passed away that morning when the Japanese suddenly attacked.

World War II in HD

Last night we turned on the television at about 7pm Hawaii time to watch an amazing documentary called World War II in HD. The History Channel's newest documentary on World War II in the European and Pacific theatres was amazing, bringing full color, high-definition footage never-seen-before and telling the story of "The Greatest Generation" through the eyes of 12 Americans who experienced the war firsthand.

The footage was found after a three year search through rare color archival footage and digitally remastered in High Definition to bring to life the war itself, creating an experience for the viewer that literally feels like they were actually there, surrounded by the real sights and sounds of the battlefields.

Last night we experienced the start of World War II at Pearl Harbor and the next four nights will bring the final 8 chapters in this exclusive High Definition documentary-each night they premiere 2 hours of the 10 hour program. Our Home of the Brave Historian Guides and those within the company highly recommend checking this program out-its not one to miss!!! One of the most entertaining attempts at creating "experimental weaponry" were known as Fire Balloons, or Balloon Bombs.

The idea was simple-utilizing the jet stream that ran through the Pacific Ocean, the Japanese inflated Hydrogen-filled balloons carrying incendiary and antipersonnel bombs that were designed to create chaos when they exploded over American cities, forests and farmlands (including Canada as well!)

Despite being an incredible idea with high expectations, the balloon bombs were relative ineffective as weapons and were used only a few times to attack North America. Between November 1944 and April 1945, the Japanese launched over nine thousand fire balloons, with an estimated success rate of reaching the US & Canada coming in at a whopping 3.3 percent! Around 300 allons were found or observed, killing six people and causing minimal damage to their targets.

Sadly enough the six people killed by a balloon bomb were five children and a woman. A 13-year-old girl attempted to pull a balloon from a tree during a church group picnic in Oregon when the bomb exploded, killing the pastors wife and five local children that had accompanied them on the outing.

Dangers of balloon bombs still may exist today. Hundreds of the balloons were never found and are still constituted as unexploded ordnance!

The Home of the Brave Railroad is a G-Scale layout oval-track train in the Home of the Brave museum. On the morning of December 7, 1941, Finn was at his home, about a mile from the aircraft hangars, when he heard the sound of gunfire. He quickly drove to the hangars seeing Japanese planes in the sky on his way to the Naval Station and found the airbase was under attack, with most of the PBYs already on fire.

His men were trying to fight back by using the machine guns mounted in the PBYs, either by firing from inside the flaming planes or by detaching the guns and mounting them on improvised stands. One of the first things he did was take control of a machine gun from his squadron's painter. "I said, 'Alex, let me take that gun'...knew that I had more experience firing a machine gun than a painter."

Finn then found a movable platform used for gunnery training, attached the .50 caliber machine gun, and pushed the platform into an open area, from which he had a clear view of the attacking aircraft. He fired on the Japanese planes for the next two hours, even after being seriously wounded, until the attack had ended. In total, he received 21 distinct wounds, including a bullet through the foot and an injury which rendered his left arm numb.

Despite his injuries, he returned to the hangars later that day, after receiving medical treatment, and helped arm the surviving American planes.

For these actions, Finn was formally presented with the Medal of Honor on September 14, 1942, by Admiral Chester Nimitz. During the remainder of World War II, he served as a Limited Duty Officer Ensign and eventually as a Lieutenant with Bombing Squadron VB-102 and aboard the USS Hancock. Basically, its a focused lamp with shutters that produces pulses of light!

It is named after its inventor Authur C W Aldis and the pulses are achieved by opening and closing shutters mounted in front of the lamp, either via a manually-operated pressure switch or, in later versions, automatically. The lamps were usually equipped with some form of optical sight, and were most commonly used on naval vessels (like the one in our museum!) and in airport control towers, using color signals for stop or clearance to airplanes waiting to take off or land.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='C. Brewer and Co. C. Brewer & Co. was one of the original "Big Five" firms, which at one time essentially controlled the islands of Hawaii.

It was founded by James Hunnewell, an officer on a ship named the Thaddeus which had brought the first missionaries here to the Hawaiian Islands in 1820. Hunnewell returned in 1826 to set up a trading company which was later traded to Captain Charles Brewer who gave the company its lasting name. After the sugar industry died out, C. Brewer & Co. branched into diversified agriculture and specialty products like Kona Coffee and Maunaloa Macadamia Nuts.

The Home of the Brave Museum acquired the safe through Lion Coffee Co. who recieved it from Rick Ralston, the founder of a popular t-shirt company called Crazy Shirts Hawaii. Short, lived. One soldier, Corporal Arthur A. Favreau, was killed on post by an errant Navy shell. Fort Shafter became a busy headquarters and the barracks on Palm Circle were converted to offices. The major headquarters was named successively U.S. Army Forces, Central Pacific Area (1943-44); U.S. Army Forces, Pacific Ocean Areas (1944-45); and U.S. Army Forces, Middle Pacific (1945-47). In 1944 the Army Corps of Engineers erected the "Pineapple Pentagon" (buildings T-100, T-101, and T-102) in just 49 days! It stands in front of Ali'iolani Hale in downtown Honolulu.

The idea to build a statue to memorialize the great King Kamehameha the first came in 1878, but the statue was actually lost at sea on its way over to Hawaii near the Falkland islands. The second statue was created and put into place in 1883, and when the first statue was recovered it was placed on the Big Island in Kohala, where Kalani Paiʻea Wohi o Kaleikini Kealiʻikui Kamehameha o ʻIolani i Kaiwikapu kaui Ka Liholiho Kūnuiākea (The Great Kings real name!) was born.

He was known for conquering the Hawaiian islands and formally establishing the kingdom of Hawaii in 1810. He is also remembered as the man to have established Kanawai Mamalahoe, or the "Law of the Splintered Paddle". During wartime and times of battle, human rights of non-combatants were protected under this provision set forth by the great King. Believe it or not, the statue is said to be life size-he stood a whopping seven feet two inches tall!

25th Infantry Tropic Lightning Monument/United by Sacrifice Memorial

The United By Sacrifice Memorial, located on base at Schofield Army Barracks, was designed by Lynn Liverton, an accomplished Hawaii-based sculptor who was contracted to create a memorial that would honor the sacrifices of our modern Soldiers and show the legacy of service and support for the current Soldier by those who served in earlier wars.

Behind the modern-day Soldier are Soldiers that represent those who fought in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The veteran Soldiers are seen reaching out to support the modern-day Soldier, who was modeled after Sargent James R. Rivera of the 25th infantry Tropic Lightning Division. Rivera was used as the model for the sculpture during his stay at Schofield where he recovered from injuries sustained in the war in Iraq.

The 25th Infantry Division Memorial will soon be duplicated and found in Washington D.C. at the National Museum of the United States Army as well. The USS Bowfin Submarine was Launched on December 7, 1942 and began her patrols in World War II nicknamed the "Pearl Harbor Avenger". During the course of her nine wartime patrols she sank an astonishing number of 44 enemy ships & accumulated over 98,758 nautical miles traveled during her time at sea.

Currently, the submarine is operated as a "living museum" to the public & provides in-depth audio tours that guide you through the sub as you explore its upper deck and inside as well. In addition to the Bowfin sub, the Pacific Submarine Museum can be visited where you can explore the fascinating history of submarines, with the first daring attempt in 1776 to use a submersible in warfare to the feats of todays nuclear submarines. The Museum Giftshop provides lots of nautical and naval items that include hats, t-shirts, books, movies and unique souvenir gifts for all ages to remember your visit to the USS Bowfin.

The park is also home to the World War II Submarine Waterfront Memorial, which stands in silent tribute to the 52 American submarines and more than 3,500 submariners lost in World War II. At approximately 8:06 a.m., 11 minutes after the attack on Pearl Harbor began by the Japanese, the USS Arizona exploded after being hit by a 1,760 armor-piercing bomb that dropped through its front deck and into its forward ammunition magazine. In less than nine minutes she had sank, coming to her final resting place on the bottom of Pearl Harbor and taking with her 1,177 sailors with her.

The 184-foot-long Memorial structure you see today was constructed in 1961 and dedicated in 1962. The architect of the Memorial, Alfred Preis, commented on the design, "wherein the structure sags in the center but stands strong and vigorous at the ends, expresses initial defeat over ultimate victory...The overall effect is one of serenity. Overtones of sadness have been omitted to permit the individual to contemplate his own personal responses...his innermost feelings." The flagpole aboard the memorial is attached to the severed mainmast of the sunken battleship as a special tribute to the ship and its lost crew.

On board the memorial you can visit the Shrine room-in here you can find the names of the 1,177 men who lost their lives on board the Arizona that morning. It played an integral part in the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and is probably known most for being the ship that the Japanese Surrender was signed on, ending the war in the Pacific on September 2, 1945.

The Missouri has called Pearl Harbor home since June 21, 1998 and has been one of the most popular tourist attractions ever since. The Missouri offers a multitude of tours aboard the ship that you can purchase online at our very own Pearl Harbor Headquarters when she is back in business early next year.

The 65-year-old ship heads into the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard tomorrow morning for sandblasting, hull inspection, replacement of rusted steel, installment of a system to monitor corrosion inside the hold and last but not least a fresh coat of paint. If all goes well and on schedule, tours of the battleship will resume a few weeks after it comes out of the Drydock on January 6, 2010. In the meantime, we offer many other options for your Pearl Harbor experience that include the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine tours, Hawaii's Pacific Aviation Museum and our very own Home of the Brave Hawaii Victory Tour-all available HERE!

Italian Prisoner of War Fountain at Fort Shafter

This gorgeous fountain has a lot more history than you may think! Located at Fort Shafter, it was sculpted by four Italian prisoners of war during their two year internment on the island of Oahu. The Italian POW's, which numbered at over 5,000, constructed it in 1944 while they participated in non-military labor projects under guidelines of the Geneva Convention.

One of the artists, Alfredo Giusti from Pietrasanta, Italy even inscribed his name and address on the northern most side of the fountain! Alfredo was an avid artist and also constructed two other sculptures out at the Coast Guard station on Sand Island.

One of our favorite stories that we tell is the honeymooning newlyweds who fell in together after handing over their camera to our tour guide to snap a pic-as a matter of fact, if your eye is keen enough in our Museum you can find the photo hiding amongst our collection of memorable moments on board the tour! If you have seen the recent Disney movie "Pearl Harbor" you may recognize the fountain as well as the surrounding area, utilized in a few scenes throughout the film!

1942 Harley-Davidson Military Motorcycle Operation & Maintenance Manual

In our Home of the Brave Museum, we have a 1942 Harley-Davidson Military Motorcycle on display. The later entry of the United States into World War II saw significantly increased production, with over 90,000 being produced during the war (along with spare parts the equivalent of many more). Unusually, all the WLAs produced after Pearl Harbor, regardless of the actual year, would be given serial numbers indicating 1942 production. Thus, war-time machines would come to be known as 42WLAs.

In early September we had the privilege of having Mr. Steve Honchar and his wife Cindy from Mineral, VA on board our tour. In his younger years, Steve worked on the exact same model motorcycles in his grandfather's Harley-Davidson Shop & was kind enough to share some of his memories in the museum during the tour! They recently mailed us his father's Operations & Maintenance Manual that will soon be on display with the hope that (with Steve's help!) we might someday bring the Motorcycle back to life.

The USARPAC Patch

LTG. Robert Richardson authorized the United States Army Pacific (USARPAC) patch on August 1st, 1944. This is a wartime patch with great significance!

The blue color of the patch represents the Pacific Ocean, covering both Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Reflecting off the surface of the water in the Southern Hemispheres are the four stars of the Southern Cross (the fifth star is not visible from Hawaii-we see it in our southern skies for only part of the year). The seven stars of Ursa Major (Big Dipper) are located on the upper right hand side and on the left in the Northern Hemisphere is the North Star (Polaris). If you add up the number of stars on the patch the total comes to Twelve, representing the month of December. The seven stars in the Big Dipper represent the seventh day of December, and the four stars of the Southern Cross and the North Star represent the number 41, or the year 1941. We see the date of the attack on Pearl Harbor in the stars, December 7th, 1941. 12/07/41.

The arrow in the center of the patch is a military map symbol;the Army calls this an "Axis of Advance". It shows the movement of troops across a battlefield. During WWII the entire Pacific Ocean was a battlefield. In this case the arrow extends from the first land victory in the Pacific (Guadalcanal) and extends to the final victory at Tokyo Bay in Japan where the surrender was signed. The arrow is painted red, symbolizing the blood shed and sacrifices made by American soldiers as they fought their way across the Pacific. The white outline of the arrow symbolizes the purity of the purpose and mission American soldiers were fighting for!

The USARPAC patch is still proudly work by our soldiers in the Pacific today!

Aloha & Welcome to the Blog of the Brave!

Welcome to the Blog of the Brave, a World War II "Time Machine" Blog that looks to perpetuate the unforgettable memories and stories of America's "Greatest Generation".
